Matt vs Gloss Kitchen Cabinets: Which Finish Is Right for You?

Choosing the right finish for your kitchen respray is just as important as choosing the colour. Here's a complete comparison of matt, satin, and gloss finishes.

    Matt Finish

Appearance: Smooth, velvety, and contemporary. Matt finishes absorb light rather than reflecting it, creating a sophisticated, understated look.

Maintenance: Matt finishes can show fingerprints slightly more, but modern factory-grade matt coatings are wipeable and durable.

Best for: Modern kitchens, dark colours, contemporary homes. Very popular in Chelsea and Kensington.

    Satin Finish

Appearance: A gentle sheen that sits between matt and gloss. The most versatile option.

Maintenance: Easiest to clean and maintain. Excellent durability.

Best for: Most kitchens. It's our most recommended finish and the choice for over 60% of our projects.

    Gloss Finish

Appearance: Highly reflective and striking. Gloss creates a sense of space and luxury.

Maintenance: Shows fingerprints, dust, and imperfections more easily. Requires more careful cleaning.

Best for: Light colours, smaller kitchens where you want to maximise reflected light, and high-end contemporary designs.

    What About Colour?

The finish affects how your chosen colour appears. Dark colours look richer in matt; light colours look brighter in gloss. Our free colour consultation includes finish samples so you can see exactly how each option looks.
