Spray Finishing Beyond the Kitchen

The same equipment, coatings and technique that produce a factory-quality kitchen finish work equally well on the rest of the joinery in your home. Built-in wardrobes, alcove shelving, media units, window seats, radiator covers, panelled doors, bannisters and fitted storage can all be sprayed to a standard that brushwork simply cannot reach.

The difference is visible immediately. Brushes leave directional marks and load unevenly into corners and mouldings; rollers leave an orange-peel texture. Spraying lays down a uniform film across flat faces, profiles and edges alike, so a run of built-in units reads as a single continuous piece of furniture rather than something assembled and painted in place.

This matters most on the pieces you look at every day. Alcove shelving either side of a chimney breast, a fitted wardrobe wall in a bedroom, or a boot-room run in a hallway are all large, prominent surfaces where finish quality determines whether the joinery looks bespoke or homemade.

What We Spray

Built-in shelving and alcove units are our most requested interior work. MDF shelving in particular benefits enormously from spraying, because sprayed coatings fill and level the porous cut edges that brushwork tends to leave fibrous and rough.

Fitted wardrobes and storage are the second most common. Bedroom wardrobe fronts are large flat panels where any brush mark or roller texture is obvious in raking daylight, so they are an ideal candidate for spray application. Colour-changing an existing fitted wardrobe is dramatically cheaper than replacing it.

Radiator covers, panelling, skirting, architrave, internal doors, staircases and bannisters round out the list. We also spray furniture and freestanding pieces where a durable, even finish is wanted, and we regularly work alongside builders and interior designers on whole-project joinery packages.

Preparation, Coatings and Working in Occupied Homes

Preparation follows the same discipline as our kitchen work: degrease, fill, sand, key, prime with a substrate-appropriate adhesion primer, flat back, then build thin topcoats. Interior joinery presents its own issues — old gloss on Victorian skirting and doors needs careful keying, MDF edges need sealing, and previously waxed or varnished timber needs stripping back before anything will bond properly.

We use Renner water-based professional coatings throughout. Being water-based, they are low-odour and low-VOC, which is what makes it realistic to spray joinery in a home that is still being lived in. There is no lingering solvent smell in bedrooms, and rooms come back into use quickly.

Containment is taken seriously. Rooms are masked and sheeted, adjacent areas are protected, extraction and dust control are set up before any spraying starts, and everything is cleaned down at the end of each day. Working room by room keeps the rest of the house usable while the project runs.

Colour, Cohesion and Cost

Interior spraying is most effective when it is used to tie a house together. Carrying a single accent colour from the kitchen island through to the alcove shelving in the next room, or matching wardrobe fronts to the bedroom's woodwork, creates the cohesion that makes a home look designed rather than decorated piecemeal.

We colour-match to any brand or RAL reference and can supply matt, satin or gloss. Satin is usually the right answer for joinery that gets handled — wardrobe doors, shelving, bannisters — because it wipes clean. Matt suits panelling and decorative surfaces that are looked at rather than touched.

Pricing depends on the surface area, the substrate, the amount of preparation the existing finish requires and the complexity of masking. Estimates are free, fixed in writing, and given after we have seen the actual pieces. All work is completed by City & Guilds qualified sprayers to the same standard as our kitchen projects.
